EFCC Explains Lekki Estate Raid That Led to 21 Arrests
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says its raid on Applewood Estate on Orchid Road, Lekki, Lagos, targeted suspected cybercrime operators accused of defrauding victims through gift cards, cryptocurrency and international money transfers. The agency said the operation followed surveillance and intelligence gathering. Operatives from its Lagos Directorate 1 reportedly arrested 21 suspects at about 5am on Monday, October 26, and recovered five vehicles. According to the EFCC, preliminary investigations implicated 19 suspects, while two people were released. The commission said the 19 suspects would be arraigned in court. The EFCC also denied allegations of harassment during the operation, saying a woman's phone was briefly held after she allegedly tried to alert suspects by phone. It said the device was returned after the operation.
