Trump Says US Will Claim Strait of Hormuz as Iran Rejects Threat

US President Donald Trump says he plans to declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory after what he described as a defeat of Iran, further raising tensions around one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Iran has rejected the claim. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the strait remains Iranian and that enforcement of its blockade would continue until Washington accepts defeat. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has not decided whether to resume talks with the US. He added that the Islamabad memorandum marked the end of the war rather than a ceasefire, as the US prepares to send another carrier group to the Middle East.
