NFF Reform: Can Nigeria Build a Better Football System After Gusau?
President Bola Tinubu has called for comprehensive reforms in Nigerian football, creating an opportunity to address years of poor results, leadership disputes, court cases and distrust among stakeholders. With the Gusau-led NFF board resigned and FIFA reportedly approving an Interim Management Committee, attention should shift to the NFF Congress. As the federation’s highest decision-making body, the Congress elects leaders, amends statutes, approves budgets and influences the direction of Nigerian football. The current structure gives State FA chairmen significant voting power. Critics argue that this can reward political loyalty over football development and leave key stakeholders underrepresented. Any reform should broaden representation, reduce excessive political influence and give credible football stakeholders a stronger voice. The real question is whether this reset will improve the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, domestic leagues, grassroots development and pathways for young talents. Will the reforms create a transparent and accountable NFF, or will the same problems return under a new structure?
