Owerri IPOB Attack: 2 Soldiers Killed, 30 Vehicles Burnt

2 soldiers have been killed and prisoners freed in Owerri, Imo State by group of assailants suspected to be members of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in the early hours of Monday. According to dailynigeria.com, the assailants attacked the correctional facility in the state capital, which led to the escape of about 1500 inmates. However, officials of the Nigerian Correctional service are yet to speak about the attack. After attacking the correctional facility, they reportedly attacked the State Police Command HQ in which about 30 vehicles were burnt The attackers were also reported to have damaged four Hilux vehicles and an armoured personnel carrier, APC. Reports have it that the attackers operated freely for more than two hours before leaving the scene in a convoy of vehicles, comprising buses and cars. Military sources disclosed that when the assailants were retreating they attacked a military checkpoint and kill two soldiers on duty, while two others sustained injury. The body of one of the diseased soldiers was reportedly set ablaze. “The soldiers were on duty at the checkpoints along Onitsha Road when the gunmen opened fire on them. “They killed two soldiers and burnt the remains of one the soldiers. They also injured two other soldiers. “In the same attack on the checkpoints, they destroyed four Hilux vehicles belonging to the military,” the source disclosed." The Inspector General of police who spoke about the incident said the attack was carried out by members of IPOB and ESN who where much in numbers and carrying modern weapons such as General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), for the operation. Governor Hope Uzodima who spoke with newsmen after he visited the scene of the incident to assess the level of damage, said government will rise to the challenge posed by IPOB and ESN.
