DR Congo Reopens Schools in Ebola-Hit Areas Despite Ongoing Outbreak

Schools have reopened in Ebola-affected parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo as the new academic year begins. Authorities dropped an earlier plan to use remote learning in high-risk communities. Officials said prolonged school closures could deepen educational inequality and keep children in affected areas away from learning. Schools, including those in parts of Ituri Province, have been directed to operate with stronger health safeguards. The measures include handwashing points, hygiene kits and close monitoring of pupils and staff for possible Ebola symptoms. Ituri remains the epicentre of the outbreak, which has recorded more than 6,000 confirmed cases and over 3,000 deaths. Health authorities and international partners are continuing containment efforts while schools maintain heightened surveillance for suspected infections.
