Arena Polo: Rules, Field Size and Equipment Explained

Arena polo is an indoor or semi-outdoor form of polo played by two teams of three riders. It follows rules similar to outdoor polo but is less physically demanding because it is played in a smaller, enclosed space. The playing area is usually made of compacted sand or fine aggregate. Standard arenas can measure about 300 by 150 feet, although smaller dimensions may be used. The enclosed setting creates tighter play and requires quicker manoeuvring. Arena polo uses an air-inflated, leather-covered ball that is larger and softer than the hard ball used in field polo. Players generally use standard polo mallets, though mallets with slightly larger heads may also be used.
