1 / 4

Nigeria’s Super Falcons lost 2-1 to South Africa in their WAFCON 2026 play-off match, ending their hopes of reaching the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-offs. After a goalless first half, Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring for South Africa in the 56th minute. Refiloe Jane added a second goal after goalkeeper Kaylin Swart denied Uchenna Kanu’s header at the other end. Nigeria pulled one back deep in stoppage time when Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty following a VAR review that also led to Jane’s dismissal. The late goal was not enough to prevent a painful defeat. South Africa celebrated their progress, while the Super Falcons were left facing serious questions over their tactics and overall performance at the tournament.
