UK Sets Key Requirements for 10-Year Permanent Residence Route

Foreign nationals seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain through the UK’s long-residence route must show 10 years of continuous lawful residence and hold valid permission to stay when they apply. Applicants aged 18 to 65 must pass the Life in the UK Test and prove their English-language ability. They will generally also need to have held their current immigration permission for at least one year. Absences from the UK are usually limited to 180 days in any 12-month period. Time spent as a visitor, on a short-term study or seasonal worker visa, on immigration bail, or after a visa has expired does not count towards the 10-year requirement. Different absence rules may apply to travel that began before 11 April 2024. People on family visas may also qualify for settlement through their British or settled partner.
