Dangote Refinery Takes FG to Court, Alleges Crude Starvation and Unfair Fuel Imports

Dangote Refinery Takes FG to Court, Alleges Crude Starvation and Unfair Fuel Imports — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Dangote Refinery has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos, accusing the Federal Government of deliberately starving its plant of crude oil and allowing cheaper foreign fuel to undercut local production. Court documents show the refinery currently receives just five cargoes of crude per month, well below the thirteen needed to run at full capacity. It says this shortfall forces it to buy expensive cargoes on the international market, squeezing margins and threatening viability. The company also challenges the regulator’s continued issuance of import licences to competitors, arguing that local output is already sufficient to meet national demand. It wants the court to halt any new licences that undermine its operations. The NNPC has denied all allegations, insisting it has not withheld supply or frustrated the refinery’s business. It says it will contest the case on procedural grounds. The court has yet to rule on the injunction request.

Do you think the court case will force the government to increase crude allocations and curb unfair fuel imports at Dangote Refinery?

It seems odd that a major refinery only receives a tiny fraction of its crude needs while cheaper foreign products flood the market.

Could internal technical issues at the refinery have contributed to low throughput, instead of blaming only government policies?

Stakeholders should push for transparent allocation data, so industry players can plan better and reduce reliance on expensive imports.
