Power Woes at UCH Ibadan Ground Services at Nigeria’s Premier Teaching Hospital
Unions at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, embarked on a five-day strike in March 2026. They protested chronic electricity outages and inadequate water supply. The action shut down wards, operating theatres and laboratories. The crisis started when IBEDC disconnected UCH over alleged debt and later reconnected it. Staff say management then rationed power to control soaring bills. They reported surgeries cancelled, tests delayed and life-saving equipment idle. IBEDC denies cutting off supply and calls it an internal energy-management issue. Hospital spokespeople say they ration electricity to meet high tariff charges and communicated water faults when they occurred. Health workers, patients and the public are calling on the federal and state governments to intervene. They warn that failing infrastructure at UCH threatens patient safety and undermines Nigeria’s healthcare system.
