Why Running a Fashion Brand in Nigeria Is Getting Harder
Starting a fashion brand in Nigeria is easier than before, but keeping one alive is increasingly difficult. Rising prices for fabrics, accessories, equipment, packaging and imported supplies are squeezing margins, while inflation and exchange-rate changes make production planning uncertain. Customers now expect more than attractive clothes. They want fast replies, flexible payments, reliable delivery, professional service and regular updates online. Meeting those expectations requires systems, staff and money that many small fashion businesses do not yet have. Social media has also turned visibility into a daily expense. Designers must create content, follow trends, work with creatives and compete with brands from across Nigeria and abroad. Yet, a large online following does not always translate into steady sales. For Nigerian fashion entrepreneurs, creativity is no longer enough. Long-term survival depends on sound pricing, financial discipline, technology, customer service and the ability to manage power, logistics and production challenges. Despite the pressure, the market still offers strong opportunities for brands that can adapt and build sustainable systems.
