With effect from April 2024, Olusegun Alebiosu has been named First Bank of Nigeria Limited’s (FirstBank Group) Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Alebiosu steps into this pivotal role from his previous position as the Executive Director, Chief Risk Officer, and Executive Compliance Officer, a position he held since January 2022.

Alebiosu brings to the helm of FirstBank over 28 years of extensive experience in the banking and financial services industry. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has released findings from a comprehensive investigation into the factors contributing to the relentless increase in consumer costs.

The Director of Surveillance and Investigation Mrs B. A. Adeyinka, said this while briefing journalists during a market surveillance to enforce prices today in Masaka Markets, Nasarawa State.

Adeyinka explained, “We’ve conducted extensive interviews with marketing executives and sellers across various sectors. Despite government efforts to stabilise the currency, prices remain high.

“Our findings point to a complex web of factors, including multiple layers of taxation and transportation costs, driving prices up. The cost of transportation is a significant burden on the sellers, and this cost is inevitably passed on to the consumer.

“For instance, a product that once cost N15,000 now sells for N50,000. This drastic increase is largely due to higher transportation expenses, the rising cost of pesticides, and security concerns in certain areas.

“Our first step is to compile a report on the multiple taxes affecting the market and advise the government on potential solutions. We aim to unlock the market by reducing these taxes, thereby easing the financial burden on both sellers and consumers.”

The FCCPC as part of its campaign for compliance sealed 4U Supermarket Wuse 2 on Thursday for breaching price and quality standards.

Speaking on Thursday, the acting Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Adamu Abdullahi, stated that the commission would continue the price enforcement in other states.

Birnin Kebbi-A portion of Dukku hill weekend collapsed and crushed to death eight ( Almajiri students at Badariya area in Birnin Kebbi.

According to the head teacher, Malam Dan Umma, who in agony spoke to the press, said that, the incident happened on Saturday morning, not knowing the cause as he was alerted by the cries of people at the back of the house only to see a large portion of the hill had fallen on the almajiris, killing eight of them instantly with while one was rescued from the rubbles was on admission at the hospital receiving treatment.

He said, the hill is just behind the place housing him and the almajiris and the is same place they use as toilets and as well dig it to collect clay to mould clay blocks in preparation to build a small room for themselves a source added.

People of the area thronged the scene of the incident to catch a glimpse of the fallen portion of the hill and to sympathize with the local Islamic cleric.

The Dukku Hill is a vast mountain that stretches to what has now harbour residential buildings due to population expansion and accommodation problem.

The victims have been buried according to islamic rites.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Birnin Kebbi local government, Alhaji Dahiru na Yaya, who confirmed the incident described it as an act of God and prayed for the repose of their souls.

I know it is a strange question to ask but what aroused my curiosity is this reply from a thread in the front page.

Some years back, I was serving in a particular state. I don't want to feed tribalist trolls so I won't name the state. An indigene of that state warned me not to go out late because the burial of a notable traditional ruler was about to take place and it is "custom" to bury that ruler with other individuals. 

So back to my question. Do Rituals Really Work? If no they why do people including educated traditional rulers observe or participate in such rituals?

Bobrisky, a controversial cross-dresser and socialite, whose real name is Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, has taken legal action by filing a Notice of Appeal through his lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, challenging his conviction on a four-count charge related to Naira abuse.

The appeal seeks to overturn the six-month imprisonment sentence handed down by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, and instead proposes a fine of N50,000 for each of the charges against Bobrisky.

Despite pleading guilty to the charges brought by the EFCC, Bobrisky argues in his appeal that the trial court's decision to impose the maximum sentence was unjust, especially considering his lack of prior criminal convictions and the availability of lesser sentencing options under the ACJA.

The appellant highlights his cooperation with the EFCC during the investigation and emphasizes that the severe sentence imposed does not align with the principles of fair and proportionate sentencing as outlined in the ACJA.

The trial judge made a legal and factual error by imposing the maximum sentence of 6 months imprisonment on the appellant without the option of a fine, going against the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of 2015.

The trial court's decision to give the appellant the maximum sentence, despite no prior criminal record, disregarded the possibility of a lesser sentence as allowed by law.

The punishment imposed on the appellant by the trial court goes against the mandatory sentencing guidelines outlined in the law, resulting in a punitive measure.

The appellant has been a victim of a miscarriage of justice due to the severe sentence handed down by the trial court.

The trial court's justification for the maximum punishment based on foreign perceptions of Naira abuse is flawed and does not align with the actual considerations that should have been taken into account.

The intention behind the Central Bank Act 2007, under which the appellant was charged, is to prevent Nigerians from tampering with Naira, not to cater to the views of foreign nationals on the matter.

The trial court overlooked the positive actions of the appellant, such as cooperating with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission during the investigation, and failed to consider these factors in the sentencing decision.

The trial court's failure to exercise discretion judiciously has led to a miscarriage of justice against the appellant.

Residents of Okuama community, Delta state, have instituted a suit against the Nigerian Army over an alleged breach of their fundamental human rights.

In the suit marked FHC/WR/CS/41/2024 and filed before a federal high court in Warri on Thursday, the plaintiffs are seeking N200 billion as general and exemplary damages.

On March 14, a group of army personnel comprising a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain and 12 soldiers were killed in the community.

Since then, there have been military operations in Okuama in a bid to find the perpetrators.

In the suit, the applicants averred that they have been subjected to accusations and media trials over the incident.

They claim they have been subjected to collective punishment by the army without any police investigation or any public inquiry indicting them for the crime.

The applicants further averred that they were displaced from their homes, their properties destroyed and many killed.

They are seeking an order from the court “for the enforcement of the fundamental rights to the dignity of the human person, right to a fair hearing, right to private and family life, freedom of movement and right of choice of place of residence and right to own property of the applicants and residents of the Okuama community”.

They are also seeking an order restraining the army from further violating their fundamental rights and an order enabling the applicants and residents of Okuama community to take back possession of their land.

Those named as applicants in the suit include Victor Akemor, Madam Omotiwori Olarehor, Victor Odi, Okrika Emmanuel, Austin Eferemua, and Evelyn Edjekola.

Others are James Ubredu, David Oghenewede, Lucky Orode, Iwriogbo Best, Felix Orhiunu, Bernard Michael, Oghenekobiruo, Vero Joseph, Ebikawe Emmanuel, Francis Uphurie, and Belvis Adogbo.

The plaintiffs are suing for themselves and the public interest of the Okuama community residents.

The lawyers in the suit are Malcolm Omirhobo, Akpokona Omafuaire, Seprebofa Oyeghe, O. L. Ofuasia, and Ernest Ogbaga.

The Edo State chapter of Labour Party (LP) has faulted the final list as published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in which the deputy governorship candidate is listed as Oluyinka Faith Alufohai rather than LP validly nominated running mate, Alhaji Asamah Yusuf Kadiri, (SAN).

Recalled on the 19th of April, 2024, The9JaTREND reported that Labour Party governorship candidate in the September 21st gubernatorial election, Olumide Akpata has dropped Oluyinka Faith Alufohai and picked Alhaji Asamah Yusuf Kadiri, SAN as the deputy governorship candidate of the party.

In a press statement signed by Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, State chairman of the party and made available to newsmen in Benin City, assured party members and supporters that “this is simply a technical error”.

According to Comrade Ogbaloi, “Our team followed all necessary procedures and submitted Alhaji Kadiri's name and credentials as the deputy governorship candidate, well within INEC's stipulated window. Unfortunately, a technical glitch occurred at the end of the National Headquarters of our party during the submission process, resulting in the incorrect name appearing on the final list.

“We are currently actively engaged with INEC officials to rectify this issue immediately and our team has provided all requisite documentation demonstrating Alhaji Kadiri's valid nomination. We have been following-up with INEC diligently, to ensure it updates its candidate list with the accurate information.

“We recognise the anxiety this error may cause, but urge our supporters to remain calm and steadfast in their commitment to our party's vision. Your unwavering support and activism have been invaluable thus far, and we need you to continue spreading awareness of our platform and championing the positive change we represent.

UNIPORT DELAY IN RELEASING GRAGUATING LIST OF 2019/2020 ACADEMIC SESSION (Physics department)

Hello naijaworlders.
I bring to your notice issues bordering on the untold hardship Uniport, Physics department is bringing upon us.

After defending our projects and final exams in the 2019/2020 academic session, four years down the line, the physics department of Uniport headed by Dr. Chad Umoren as the then HOD is yet to release our results and graduating list.

Years after graduation and celebration of our convocation, we cannot move forward or make meaningful progress but rather stagnant and overwhelmed by depression, helplessness and suicide.

After much pressure from student and parents, the only excuse that was given by the department was that the laptop crashed and our exam records cannot be retrieved so they are working on it.

We cannot apply for jobs or be gainfully employed due to not being mobilized for NYSC. Many of us has missed life changing opportunities due to this challenge. Many of us are roaming the streets, many are even depressed. I mean, how do we explain to our parents, sponsors, neighbors well-wishers and even naysayers that we actually fulfilled all academic requirements from the University of Port Harcourt?

Many of our struggling and ailing parents, who, amidst the hardship managed to sponsor us, who wished to see their children graduate have died in their hopelessness.

We fear that if this issue lingers further beyond these four years already wasted in this difficult country and challenging economy, more students will/may commit suicide as there seems to be no hope in sight.

We are using this medium to pray and call on the following:

*The Minister of Education.
*The Senate committee on education.
*The Honorable House and Committee members on education
*Rivers State commissioner of education
*The NUC
Including relevant Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and other well meaning Nigerians to use their most revered office to intervene immediately and prevail on this lingering issue which has taken years by requesting the vice Chancellor, university of Port Harcourt to intervene immediately and engage Uniport Physics department to resolve this matter as soon as possible in the interest of our future.

Please, we are begging the government and well meaning Nigerians to come to our aid.
