Sunday Igboho: From Apprentice to Yoruba Nation Leader – Exile and Triumphant Return
Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo—better known as Sunday Igboho—refused to be told what to do by any authority. He began as a motorcycle mechanic’s apprentice in a town scarred by communal strife and later emerged as a feared grassroots strongman in Ibadan’s political underground. He reinvented himself as a Yoruba nationalist, leading thousands in clashes with herders over issues the state ignored. A midnight DSS raid left two of his men dead and forced him into the night. He was pursued across West Africa, arrested in Benin Republic, and spent over two years in prison without abandoning his cause. He watched his mother die while behind bars, buried her upon a brief return, then resumed exile in Germany. Nearly five years after leaving home, he overcame political pressure and diplomatic hurdles to return on January 26, 2026. His first words were simple: “It did not break me. Thank you to those who stood firm. To those who doubted, I wish you peace. The work continues.”
