Honesty Honours God, Even When It Costs You

Proverbs 12:22 teaches that truthful words please God, while lying is condemned. Honesty can be difficult, especially when telling the truth may cost us something. Rosalie Elliot, an 11-year-old contestant in a spelling competition, faced that test. After the judges could not tell whether she had correctly pronounced a letter, she admitted that she had misspelled the word. Though she left the stage, her honesty earned a standing ovation. As Christians, we are called to be truthful in our words and actions. Scripture urges us to put away lies and speak truthfully to one another, because integrity honours God.

I agree; the cost is exactly what makes honesty meaningful, especially when it would be easier to protect yourself.

The example of an 11-year-old facing that kind of choice shows why honesty is easier to praise than to practise.

Still, calling honesty costly should not excuse people who use blunt truthfulness without wisdom or kindness.

A useful habit is to pause before responding, state only what you know, and accept correction when you get something wrong.
