When You Send Money Home for Building Materials, Does It Really Get Used for That?

I need honest answers, no forming. I have seen this issue from both sides. A friend in Houston sent $2,000 for 300 blocks for his house project in Oyo State. The money went to his brother, but months later there were no blocks on site and no receipt. He was later told the money was used for Mama’s hospital bills and a family meeting. I have also seen relatives send money for blocks, drugs and other specific needs, only for part of it to be redirected to another “emergency.” Last year, I sent more than $4,000 for my building project and could only account for about 40 percent. It was not necessarily theft; money without clear boundaries can end up being used for anything. What helped me was tagging transfers and separating funds into CARE, BUILD and SCHOOL envelopes. BUILD money does not move to CARE unless we discuss it first. I also ask for updates and pictures instead of starting with accusations. For those building from abroad or sending money from Lagos to the village, how do you track your money and avoid family quarrels?
