Nigeria Wins $2.35bn Mambilla Arbitration Case as Tinubu Meets Macron in Paris
Nigeria has won an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration case involving Sunrise Power and Transmission Company over the long-delayed Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Taraba State. The tribunal dismissed Sunrise Power’s $2.35 billion claim and rejected its demand for a further $400 million. It also ordered the company and its promoter, Leno Adesanya, to refund 75 per cent of Nigeria’s legal costs, including $9.32 million still payable with annual compound interest. President Bola Tinubu said the ruling removes a major legal obstacle to the proposed 3,050-megawatt hydropower project. He said Nigeria would continue to honour legitimate obligations while challenging claims it considers exploitative. Tinubu later met French President Emmanuel Macron for a private dinner at the Élysée Palace, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to closer Nigeria-France cooperation.
