Davido-Uzodimma Row Raises Questions About Imo Government's Communication Chain

Davido publicly appealed to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the APC Osun Governorship Campaign Council, to help ensure a peaceful governorship election in Osun State. The singer said he respected the governor as an Imo son-in-law and urged him to use his influence in the interest of peace. The appeal drew a sharp response from Ambrose Nwogwugwu, the governor's Special Assistant on Electronic and Creative Media, who described it as emotional blackmail. The governor's Chief Press Secretary later distanced Uzodimma from the statement, saying the aide had expressed a personal opinion. That explanation raises questions about communication protocol in Imo Government House. A media aide appointed to represent and protect a governor's public image carries official weight, especially when speaking on an issue directly involving that governor. If such statements can later be dismissed as personal views, the public may reasonably question who is authorised to speak for the administration. The dispute also blurred the line between party and government communication. Since the controversy concerned Uzodimma's role in the APC campaign council, clarification could have come through the campaign structure rather than Government House. The wider issue is whether the government has a clear and accountable chain for politically sensitive public statements.

Respectfully, an appeal alone does not show that the Imo government has a communication problem.

Officials should state their roles clearly and communicate any election-related commitments directly to the public.
