Six Years After #EndSARS, Calls for Police Accountability Remain Unresolved
Six years after the #EndSARS protests, concerns over police brutality, torture, extortion, unlawful detention and deaths in custody remain unresolved. Although SARS was disbanded and reform panels were set up, similar allegations continue to emerge from conventional police formations and tactical units. Existing laws, including the Police Act and Anti-Torture Act, require stronger enforcement. Survivors have reported difficulty securing justice even after court rulings, while recent findings from a coroner’s inquest in Owerri highlighted allegations of torture, overcrowding, extortion and denial of bail. The call is for independent investigations, enforcement of outstanding panel recommendations, electronic custody records, recorded interrogations, civilian oversight and prompt compliance with court judgments. Better welfare for police officers is also necessary, but it must go alongside accountability and respect for citizens’ rights.
