Uganda Restricts DR Congo Transit Travel After Ebola Case Detected in Nigeria
Uganda has barred travellers with a recent travel history to the Democratic Republic of the Congo from transiting through the country. The move follows investigations into a traveller who later tested positive for Ebola in Nigeria. Ugandan health authorities said the traveller showed no symptoms when leaving Uganda. They are working with Nigerian officials to trace her movements, determine when symptoms began and establish where exposure may have occurred. Uganda says it has no active Ebola cases. Authorities have restored traveller locator forms and strengthened screening at border points and health facilities. Nigeria’s health minister said genomic analysis found the virus in the Nigerian patient was highly similar to that in Kenya’s first imported case, although there is no evidence the Nigerian patient travelled to Kenya. Travellers are advised to cooperate with screening measures, practise good hand hygiene and report suspected unauthorised border crossings for public-health follow-up.
