Fanti Carnival 2026: Celebrating Lagos Island’s Afro-Brazilian Heritage
The Lagos Fanti Carnival is a century-old cultural celebration that honours the heritage of Afro-Brazilian returnees who settled on Lagos Island during the 19th century. The festival blends Brazilian and Portuguese carnival traditions with Yoruba culture. Its parades feature sequined costumes, feathered headpieces, floats, talking drums, trumpets and stilt walkers. Historic neighbourhood groups also take part in their distinctive colours. Recent editions at Tafawa Balewa Square have included live performances by Nigerian artists and attracted large crowds.
