Tinubu Orders EFCC to Unfreeze Osun Government Account Days Before Election

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to return to court and seek the lifting of an order freezing Osun State Government’s bank account. Tinubu said he was embarrassed by the timing of the action, which came days before the Osun governorship election. While acknowledging the EFCC’s legal authority to investigate suspected financial crimes, he warned that the move could create an impression of federal interference in the poll. The President said he was not aware of the EFCC’s decision before the court order was obtained on August 5. He added that the agency must be allowed to work independently, but said actions by federal institutions are often linked to the Presidency. He directed the EFCC to immediately apply to vacate the order and discontinue the action against the Osun State Government in order to protect public confidence in the election process.
