Six Nigerians Arrested in Nonthaburi Romance Scam Raid
Thai police raided a riverside condominium in Nonthaburi on May 22 and arrested six Nigerian nationals in a sting dubbed “Dark Room Crackdown.” Officers searched three units under warrants from the Nonthaburi Provincial Court. The suspects, aged 23 to 35, had overstayed their visas by up to 1,560 days. Police seized 18 mobile phones, three laptops and bank books. Investigators say the devices contained scam scripts and AI-generated images used to deceive victims. Authorities allege the group created fake profiles of pilots, doctors and other professionals across Messenger, Facebook and other platforms. They won victims’ trust before claiming parcels were held by customs, then demanded money transfers. All six were taken to Rattanathibet Police Station and charged with secret society membership and visa overstays. Police say further charges for romance-scam offences may follow after coordinating with victims and local stations.
