Atiku Demands Release of Five Arraigned Over ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-Shirts
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for the release of five men arrested and arraigned in Maiduguri, Borno State, over T-shirts bearing the slogan, “Tinubu Must Go.” He argued that expressing a political opinion should not be treated as a crime in a democracy. The defendants were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbing public peace and thuggery. They pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri. The court adjourned until October 6, 2026, for a ruling on their bail application and fixed October 26, 2026, for trial. Atiku asked authorities to allow the defendants access to their families and lawyers, and to release them if the slogan was the sole basis for their arrest.
