AI Will Support, Not Replace Teachers, Says Governor Mbah
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah says artificial intelligence should be used to strengthen teaching rather than replace teachers. Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ national conference in Enugu, he said AI can help teachers personalise learning, prepare lessons and identify gaps in pupils’ understanding. He said technology cannot replace the human side of teaching, including mentoring children, inspiring ambition and understanding learners’ individual circumstances. He called for ethical standards, data protection, regulation and continuous training for teachers as AI becomes more common in education. Mbah said his administration has recruited 6,850 teachers and education personnel to address shortages. He also said education has received 33 per cent of the state budget across three budget cycles, while Smart Green Schools are being developed across Enugu’s 260 wards.
