Global Scholars Converge at Crescent University for Islamic History Seminar
Crescent University’s Department of Islamic Studies welcomed an international delegation from Europe, America, Asia and Africa under the Oasis Initiative. Renowned scholars gathered to examine how Western narratives have framed the history of Islam. In a keynote lecture titled “The History of Islam in Early Medieval Europe,” Dr Umar Faruq Abdullah traced the Umayyad expansion into Andalus and Septimania. He highlighted how Islamic rule in Muslim Spain and Portugal fostered coexistence, intellectual growth and ethical trade. Speakers also explored Islam’s spread through problem-solving in Sicily and its appeal to Northern Europe amid economic decline. In West Africa, Muslim traders built cooperative markets and scholarly communities that set the stage for reform movements such as Usman dan Fodio’s. Emeritus Prof Kamaldeen Balogun affirmed Crescent University’s commitment to preserving authentic religious history. He urged a paradigm shift towards knowledge, calling it “the only password” for understanding faith and global connections.
