Is Street Attention Ever a Compliment? A Debate on Catcalling

I think many women value attention and validation, while many men now hesitate to approach women in public because they fear rejection or embarrassment. Street touts and bus conductors, however, often call out to women without hesitation. Some people may see this as attention, but it can quickly become harassment when it is unwanted, aggressive or involves touching someone without consent. To me, the bigger question is whether attention from strangers should be treated as a compliment at all. Respectful interest and unwanted street harassment are not the same thing, regardless of who is doing it.
