Umahi: Carter Bridge Reconstruction Will Take 24 Months as Lagos Cannot Afford Full Closure

The Federal Government says the reconstruction of Lagos’ 1.58km Carter Bridge will be completed within 24 months, instead of the earlier 36-month timeline. Works Minister Dave Umahi said the bridge cannot be fully closed because doing so would cause severe traffic disruption across Lagos. Underwater surveys found major deterioration in the more than 60-year-old structure. Several piles have detached from their caps, while rust, erosion and illegal sand mining have weakened sections of the bridge. The redesigned bridge will include more ramps, an elevated carriageway and a cable-stayed section to improve traffic flow and allow water navigation. Contractor CCECC has completed preliminary site work and is expected to begin piling shortly. Officials also said repairs on Iddo Bridge are nearing completion, with one repaired section expected to reopen to traffic after the concrete cures.
