Benue Bans Compulsory After-School Lessons, Restricts Graduation Ceremonies
The Benue State Government has banned compulsory extra lessons after normal school hours as schools resume for the new session. The Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Margaret Adamu, said PTAs must obtain ministry approval before organising extra lessons. Any approved lessons must remain optional for learners, while schools that violate the directive risk sanctions. Schools were also directed to use only approved textbooks and stop embedding textbook costs in school fees. Parents may buy approved books from schools or other vendors. The government also reaffirmed its ban on graduation ceremonies for ECCDE, Lower Basic and Middle Basic classes. Schools must prevent bullying, harassment, hazing, violence and unsafe birthday celebrations involving students.
