NEMA Trains Emergency Teams to Improve Flood and Urban Rescue Response
The National Emergency Management Agency has held a refresher training in Owerri to strengthen the ability of emergency responders to handle floods and other urban disasters. The training focused on urban search and rescue operations, including responses to building collapses, landslides, explosions, industrial accidents and flooding. NEMA said such operations require specialised skills, proper equipment, teamwork and quick decision-making. Personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service and National Inland Waterways Authority took part. Participants also carried out a simulation exercise at the Otammiri River on rescuing a drowning person.
