Israeli Knesset Approves Mandatory Death Penalty for West Bank Terror Convictions

The Israeli parliament voted 62-48 to adopt a law imposing the death penalty by hanging on West Bank Palestinians convicted of deadly terror attacks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the far-right Otzma Yehudit minister Itamar Ben Gvir backed the measure. Under the new law, military courts must hand down death sentences for those found guilty of deadly terrorism, with life imprisonment only allowed in narrow “special circumstances.” Appeals are eliminated and a simple majority of judges is sufficient for execution orders. The legislation applies solely to Palestinians tried in military courts. Israeli citizens face civilian courts and are subject to a separate, narrower death-penalty clause. Critics warn the law institutionalizes unequal justice and could escalate tensions.
