UPTH Don Urges Upgrade of Cardiac Centre as South-South Regional Hub
A cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Port Harcourt has called for the upgrade of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital’s Cardiovascular and Thoracic Centre into a Centre of Excellence and a regional cardiac hub for the South-South. He said the facility should be equipped to provide advanced heart, chest and vascular surgery, helping patients access timely treatment in Nigeria instead of travelling abroad. He also urged the creation of specialised units for adult and paediatric cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery. The professor further recommended a thoracic oncology programme, a molecular diagnostics laboratory and stronger research capacity for lung cancer, transplant medicine and complex bleeding disorders. He said sustained investment in specialist training, intensive care, diagnostics and research would improve survival rates and expand access to advanced care.
