I Funded My Wife’s Business With ₦850,000, but It Is Registered in Her Sister’s Name

I have been married for four years and we have one child. Last year, my wife said she wanted to start a provisions and cosmetics business so she could contribute more to the home. I supported the idea and gave her ₦850,000 from my personal savings to rent a shop and buy stock. The business has grown beyond our expectations. She has been reinvesting the profits and expanding into online sales. Today, while helping her print a document, I saw the CAC registration papers and discovered that the business is registered in her younger sister’s name. My wife is only listed as the manager, even though her sister does not work in the business or live in our state. When I asked about it, she said it was for tax and business-protection reasons and that it was still “our business.” But I am concerned because my name is not on any document, not even as an investor. If anything happens to our marriage, what claim would I have over the ₦850,000 I put into it? Am I overreacting, or is this a genuine reason to be worried? How should spouses properly document money invested in each other’s businesses without creating mistrust?

Was registering the shop in her sister's name something you both discussed before you released the ₦850,000, or did you find out later?

Exactly, that detail matters plenty. A business registration is not something to treat like small print.

Supporting a spouse's business is admirable, but ownership paperwork can carry emotions beyond the money itself, especially with a child and shared home.

The registration alone may not automatically mean bad intentions; some people use relatives' names for reasons they consider convenient, even if it creates distrust.

Have a calm conversation first, then agree on written records for the funding, business ownership, and future contributions before putting more money into it.
