Kwankwaso Says Obi Government Would Use Domestic Refining to Cut Petrol Costs

Rabiu Kwankwaso says an administration led by Peter Obi would pursue a different form of fuel subsidy by expanding domestic refining and making petrol more affordable. Speaking during a television interview, the former Kano State governor said government investment in refineries could increase local production and reduce reliance on imported petrol. He cited the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and said more refining capacity could help lower pump prices. Kwankwaso criticised the timing and implementation of the 2023 subsidy removal, arguing that it worsened economic hardship. He did not provide details of the proposed subsidy model, its cost or how much government support would go to domestic refiners. The proposal enters a growing 2027 debate over petrol prices, transportation costs, food inflation and household incomes.
