Ajaero Says ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Has Not Eased Workers’ Hardship
NLC President Joe Ajaero says Nigerian workers are yet to experience the promised “age of prosperity,” as inflation continues to weaken the value of their wages. He said rising costs of food, fuel, transport and housing have made the ₦70,000 minimum wage inadequate. According to him, labour accepted the wage partly because of promised palliatives, including CNG transport infrastructure, vehicle conversion kits and cash transfers. Ajaero argued that the measures have been insufficient and warned that unresolved welfare concerns could trigger fresh industrial unrest. He also said lower petrol prices may be possible if local refineries receive domestic crude under favourable pricing arrangements.
