R. Kelly Asks Trump to Commute His 30-Year Sentence

R. Kelly Asks Trump to Commute His 30-Year Sentence

R&B singer R. Kelly has formally asked President Trump to commute his 30-year prison term for federal sex trafficking and racketeering convictions. His legal team submitted the petition to the U.S. Pardon Attorney’s office this year, and it is currently pending review. Kelly’s attorneys claim federal agents tampered with his mail to pressure witnesses and later recruited a white supremacist to threaten him in prison. He was convicted in New York in September 2021 on nine counts under the Mann Act and racketeering charges. In February 2023, he received an additional 20-year sentence for child sex crimes, to run mostly concurrent with his existing term. The 59-year-old artist now faces decades behind bars as he awaits a decision on his clemency plea.

He's asking Trump to commute a 30-year term despite serious federal convictions. That timing seems suspiciously convenient.

It feels premature to call for leniency before victims' voices are fully addressed and trauma is recognized.
