Senegal Charges 71 Men Under Tougher Same-Sex Relations Law
Senegal has charged 71 men with alleged “unnatural acts” as authorities step up enforcement of laws targeting same-sex relations. The public prosecutor’s office said the men appeared in court after a preliminary investigation. Charges against 28 other defendants were dropped, alongside allegations relating to endangering lives and the deliberate transmission of HIV/AIDS. The prosecutions follow tougher penalties introduced for same-sex relations, including prison terms of up to 10 years and sanctions for promoting homosexuality. Rights groups warn that the measures could deepen discrimination and restrict access to essential health services for vulnerable people. In a separate case, prosecutors have appealed the decision to drop similar charges against a French engineer who had been detained since February.
