Sokoto Excavation Pit Collapse Buries Two Siblings Alive
A roadside pit in Boyekai town, Goronyo LGA, collapsed on April 29, 2026, trapping a group of children digging laterite for home repairs. Eleven-year-old Yahuza Ibrahim and his younger brother, Mubarak Dandare, were buried under the soil. Eyewitnesses say the children had worked with an elder sibling to source building material. After one child carried away soil on a donkey, the remaining youngsters continued digging until the pit gave way without warning. Villagers rushed to help but found the victims already lifeless. The bodies were retrieved and buried the same day according to Islamic rites. Some children sustained injuries and are receiving treatment, raising fresh concerns over the dangers of informal excavations in the community.
