Intercessory Prayer: Standing in the Gap for Others
Intercessory prayer means praying to God on behalf of another person, family, community, church or nation. It shifts the focus from personal needs to carrying the burdens of others in prayer. The Bible gives several examples of intercession. Abraham pleaded for Sodom, Moses prayed repeatedly for Israel, and Samuel regarded prayer for God’s people as a serious responsibility. Ezekiel also describes God’s search for someone to stand in the gap for the land. Christians are encouraged to pray for all people. As stated in 1 Timothy 2:1, supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving should be made for others as an expression of love and spiritual responsibility.
