Golden Eaglets’ MRI Screening Must Come Before Final U-17 Selection
Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the U-17 AFCON after losing at the WAFU B tournament highlights persistent problems in the Golden Eaglets’ selection and preparation. The team reportedly lost its preferred goalkeeper shortly before the tournament after he failed the mandatory MRI age test. He had played in the preparatory matches, but Mutiu Adedayo replaced him for the match against Niger. I believe MRI screening should be conducted at the start of every U-17 camp, before tactical preparation begins. This would allow coaches to identify eligible players early and build a stable squad with adequate replacements. The NFF must also ensure that selections are based on merit, eligibility and commitment to Nigeria.
