Johannesburg and Accra Rank Among the World’s Top 20 Nightlife Cities for 2026
Johannesburg and Accra are the only African cities in Time Out’s list of the world’s 20 best nightlife destinations for 2026. Johannesburg ranked seventh globally, ahead of cities including Amsterdam, Madrid and Seoul. Time Out cited its evolving club culture, Afro-house, gqom, techno, live music and relatively affordable nights out. About 66% of surveyed locals rated nightlife as affordable, while 80% said it was easy to find community. Accra came 18th, with Osu and East Legon highlighted as key nightlife hubs. The city was praised for its mix of bars, clubs, live music and alternative scenes spanning Afrobeats, electronic music, alté and R&B. Bangkok ranked first overall, followed by Berlin and New York City.
