2013 NTA Report on Obi’s Anambra Pension Payments Resurfaces Amid Debt Dispute
A 2013 Nigerian Television Authority report has resurfaced amid the disagreement between Peter Obi and the Anambra State Government over debts allegedly left by his administration. The report, published on November 8, 2013, said Obi’s government paid ₦1.2 billion to pensioners. It stated that the payment brought the total committed to clearing pension arrears dating back to 1996 to ₦33 billion. Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration says some salary, pension and gratuity liabilities, including obligations involving former Water Corporation workers, remained after Obi left office in 2014. Obi maintains that his administration cleared inherited arrears and left no outstanding salary, pension or gratuity debts. The old report has fuelled fresh online arguments, with supporters citing it as evidence of Obi’s record on pension payments and the state government maintaining that legacy liabilities remained.
