Jigawa Government Urged to Act Quickly as Apollo Outbreak Spreads in Hadejia

I am appealing to the Jigawa State Government, the Ministry of Health and the Primary Health Care Development Agency to urgently contain the conjunctivitis, popularly called Apollo, outbreak affecting Hadejia and nearby communities. Free eye-care supplies should be provided at hospitals, PHCs and schools in affected areas. Public awareness campaigns should also discourage harmful home remedies such as putting urine, lemon juice or other unsafe substances in the eyes. Radio, social media, mobile announcements, religious leaders and traditional rulers can help spread hygiene information. Schools should allow infected pupils and students to stay home for five to seven days to reduce transmission. Government offices and other public spaces should regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces. Eye-care specialists should also be deployed to rural communities to treat severe cases and prevent complications.
