Ondo Indigene Urges Aiyedatiwa to Declare August 20 Isese Day
An Ondo State indigene has urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to formally recognise August 20 as Isese Day, saying the move would help preserve Yoruba indigenous culture and heritage. He noted that Lagos, Osun, Oyo and Ogun have recognised the date for Isese celebrations. He argued that Ondo State should also create an official platform for traditional institutions, cultural groups, historians and young people to celebrate and learn about local customs. According to him, recognising Isese Day should be seen as cultural preservation, not religious competition. He said the state can protect freedom of worship for Christians, Muslims and other faiths while promoting indigenous language, arts, music, folklore and traditional knowledge. He called for consultations with traditional rulers, religious leaders, historians and community stakeholders to develop an inclusive framework for the proposed observance.
