How Nigeria Is Regaining Peace After Two Decades of Insurgency

Since 2009, Nigeria faced relentless attacks from Boko Haram. No weekend passed without headlines about bombings and raids. Villages were abandoned and displaced people swelled IDP camps. Schools, churches, mosques and markets all came under attack. Farming communities in the Middle Belt also suffered at the hands of armed militias. With US intelligence support and determined Nigerian troops, ISWAP strongholds were bombarded and dismantled. Bandit camps in Zamfara were targeted and their holdouts collapsed. Today, newspaper headlines no longer carry daily reports of large-scale violence. To build on this peace, the government must eradicate poverty, fill ungoverned spaces and urgently establish state police.
