UniIlorin Medical Students Urge Tinubu to Double MDCN Quota to 300

UniIlorin Medical Students Urge Tinubu to Double MDCN Quota to 300

We write to appeal to President Tinubu for an urgent increase in the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria indexing quota for the University of Ilorin MBBS programme. The current cap of 150 students leaves many qualified graduates waiting to complete their professional induction. This delay imposes severe emotional, financial, and psychological burdens on students who have met every academic and clinical requirement. Expanding the quota to 300 for the current 600-level class would help these students proceed without further setback. Boosting this quota also addresses Nigeria’s doctor shortage and strengthens our healthcare workforce. We respectfully request that relevant authorities expedite all necessary approvals to implement this change immediately.

How might doubling the MDCN quota at UniIlorin affect the backlog of qualified graduates awaiting induction?

Do we have any projections on how increasing the quota would speed up induction for those already waiting?

Increasing the cap from 150 to 300 seems straightforward, but does the infrastructure support twice as many medical students?

Is it really fair to ask for a sudden doubling when other universities might need similar support under the same policy?

Maybe a phased increase, with added lecture halls and staff recruitment each year, could ensure quality training remains intact.
