Mikel Merino Recalls Escaping Dortmund Bus Bomb Attack After Changing Seats
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has recalled how changing seats shortly before Borussia Dortmund’s team bus was bombed in 2017 may have saved his life. Merino was travelling with Dortmund teammates to their Champions League quarter-final against Monaco when three explosives detonated near the bus. A piece of shrapnel reportedly lodged in the headrest of the seat he would normally have used. The Spanish international said he had moved to a seat closer to the front because his legs felt tight. He described the aftermath as chaotic, with smoke, screams and injured teammates, including Marc Bartra, who required surgery for a wrist injury.
