24km to Save My Baby: Lagos Ambulance’s Early Morning Rescue

24km to Save My Baby: Lagos Ambulance’s Early Morning Rescue — 1 of 3
1 / 3

At 3:20am my 7-month-old daughter developed a 38.5°C fever during heavy rain. Without a vehicle, my wife and I didn’t know how to reach the hospital. I called the Lagos emergency line around 4:07am and an ambulance was dispatched from Badagry. After confirming my location by phone, the team waited for us at Checkpoint Bus Stop by 5:07am despite the poor road conditions. They rushed us to Badagry General Hospital. We paid ₦2,000 for registration, ₦8,000 for tests, and ₦4,000 for medications. There were no consultation or ambulance fees, and active insurance would have cut our total to ₦1,400. This shows how good roads and reliable services save lives. I urge the government to repair the Ibiye–Checkpoint–Magbon road, upgrade the Ilepo Primary Health Centre to 24-hour service, employ more doctors in Badagry, and improve local power and medical record systems.

I felt pure relief when the ambulance pulled up after that tense, rainy Badagry drive.

Covering 24km in heavy rain sounds impressive, but I wonder about possible delays en route.

It's unsettling to rely on hope while waiting hours for an ambulance in a supposedly modern city.

Keeping a thermometer and charged phone within arm's reach could speed up your call for help next time.
