RSUTH Performs First Automated Red Cell Exchange for Sickle Cell Patient
The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, has performed its first automated red cell exchange procedure for a patient living with sickle cell disease. The procedure removes red blood cells containing sickle haemoglobin and replaces them with healthy donor cells. When clinically necessary, it can help reduce sickled cells in the bloodstream and prevent or manage serious complications. The development expands RSUTH’s haematology and transfusion medicine capacity. It could also reduce the need for patients in Rivers State and neighbouring communities to travel elsewhere for specialised care.
