Sowore Should Let IBB Be Celebrated at 85, Writer Argues
I was shocked by Omoyele Sowore’s criticism of Nigerians celebrating former military president Ibrahim Babangida at 85. While Sowore is known for speaking up for rights, I believe he showed little empathy or respect for an elder whose time in office still provokes strong opinions. More than three decades after Babangida left office, many Nigerians continue to remember what they consider his contributions to the country. I believe this enduring recognition is not driven by contracts or appointments, but by a reassessment of his record beyond the negative narratives long circulated about him. Supporters point to the creation of several states, the establishment of security agencies, and major infrastructure projects in Abuja, housing, transport, power, water supply and the military. Those who dispute these achievements should challenge the specific records rather than repeat unproven claims.
