FG Urges Hospitals to Maintain Care and Referrals for Cancer Patients

The Federal Government has urged hospitals not to discharge cancer patients simply because curative treatment is no longer available. Facilities that cannot provide needed care should promptly refer patients to centres that can continue treatment and support. The National Cancer Control Plan coordinator at the Federal Ministry of Health said patients should only be discharged when they are clinically stable, can take treatment orally and no longer need close medical monitoring. He stressed that advanced cancer patients deserve comfort, dignity and effective pain relief. The government also called for palliative care to begin early in a patient’s treatment journey, rather than only when recovery is no longer possible. Such care can address pain as well as the psychological, financial, social and spiritual pressures faced by patients and their families.
